We have a number of steam turbines that are quite old. The turbines are being supplied with gland steam to maintain conditions in the casing. At times there are problems on the dischage side and we loose vacuum. When this happens, the operators increase the gland steam supply pressure to try to alleviate the problem. Due to this, we get a large amount of water in our oil system. This is not good for obvious reasons. Does anybody have a suggestion regarding this problem?

Install a gland steam pressure regulator, this will prevent a vacuum loss into the condenser as well as guard against excess steam flow in the seal which leaks into the bearing housing and the bearing oil. A lube oil cleaning system will remove the excess water from the lube oil and is standard on most steam turbines. Check out Turbo Toc for more info
