steam turbine went on fire

Dear All,Good day,

here we are in a gas plant 10 years old.WE have three steam turbine (22MKW), each one of these turbines is in the canopy (enclosure)there is no any fire protection in side the canopy. Recently one of them is went in fire and almost damaged every thing. In my opinion the HAZOP study was poor.what do you thing?

is installing the fire system for steam foreseen and possible?. which is the best company for installing fire system?

It's not so much the steam you would be installing the suppression system for, as it is the lubricating oil that is pumped through the turbine bearings at high pressure. It is most certainly possible to install a suppression system for this type of hazard. NFPA 850 would be a good starting point.

Protection of the lube oil system is common practice in the power gen field. as noted, you should do some research on this. check out the FM data sheets as well. If there are other power plants in your area, you could see examples of this.

We install heat detectors above the bearings and interlock the fire alarm system with deluge nozzles that are aimed towards the bearings. So far we have not had any problems. Be sure to select the correct temperature range heat detector due to the significant heat that is generated by the steam process.
