steel acid-resistance finish

Hello

We are going to use small carbon steel components on a application, which is close to a battery. So the components could contact with battery acid. Can we coating/painting the components to protect them against battery-acid corrosion? If so, what is the best surface finishing? If not, what materials can we use instead of carbon steel?

About battery acid, my understanding is it is about 33~37% sulphuric acid. Is it right?

You have to decide about failure modes and exposure probability to determine if a coated carbon steel will suffice, or if you have to use a corrosion-resistant alloy. My guess is a coated carbon steel fastener will work. For automotive applications, typical zinc-flake systems (Magni, Dorken, and MCI) are used (but aren't long-term resistant). For more improved resistance, there are several coatings available from Whitford:
