I need to remove the existing precast lintel and 2 courses of 8" cmu's to raise the 10'6" wide opening to 96 1/6". The poured cmu bond beam shall remain. I am planning to install a W8x15 A500 Gr. B beam 12' long. This is a residential house with a second wood frame floor above and shingle roof. Is this beam adequate? Also how do I brace the beam for stability?

I would use a minimum of a W8x24 as it is 6 1/2" wide instead of 4" and will support the CMU better.

I'm not sure of your location, but there's a company called Powers Steel that makes steel lintels. The have design tables and their lintels are likely to be much lighter than a W section. They're based in Phoenix, but I think they distribute nationwide, and might even be easier to get than a W section cut to fit.
