Should there be a different type of connection for a column base plate to a W shaped top flange; when the beam is in positive moment, when the beam is in negative moment?
I would like to use a steel base plate with 3/4" bolts connecting to the top flange. I am concerned with:
1) The reduction in area of top flange while the beam is in negative moment.
2) If eliminating the bolts, would welding the base plate to the top flange result in an undesirable connection while the beam is in negative moment?
I appreciate any help on this subject.
