I've been seeing this term centering on some plans lately and was curoious what it means such as:

Deck centering shall be placed according to manf. recommendations ...

Any ideas?

It's another term for decking.

I believe it was originally used for a strange product comprised of wire mesh of some kind along with a tar-paper like fabric - with the wires "sewn" into the fabric. This was stapled or somehow connected to the supporting steel joists and then concrete was placed over it....sort of a cantenary cable support where the "centering" sagged a bit, but served well for a temporary form. You see this in many older buildings around the middle of the 1900's.

I agree with JAE.

My mentor always called floor deck centering.

According to my construction dictionary, the term centering comes originally from brick masonry construction. Temporary falsework is used in the center of openings beneath arches or vaults until the structure becomes self-supporting. The form deck used for casting slabs functions similarly, hence the use of the term centering.
