Steel frame weight estimation

Hi,

I have noticed that the Steel construction.org for low-rise (up to 4 floors) suggests a steel weight estimation of 50-60kg/m2

Considering that a steel beam is given in kg/m (say 40kg/m), how do we actually estimate the steel weight in kg/m2.

Divide by the beam spacing.

Also need to account for column weights.
 
Phil1934 is correct. The weight/area is derived by the typical total weight of steel for this type (low-rise) of building divided by the total floor area, and weight/length is the unit weight of the steel shapes, which is required for the calculation of the total weight of steel in a building.
 
Depends on the type of structure and use... I would have thought about 40 kg/m2. Beams, girders, columns, and approx 10% for bracing.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

An honestly, it's not so easy to just throw a number at it.

A heavy floor system, or heavier design live loading could increase the member sizing significantly. So could the lateral system. Bracing is the cheapest, moment frames quite expensive, shear walls (concrete or CMU) would likely fall somewhere in between.

Hanscomb and RSMeans have good information on preliminary budgeting based on construction type.
