Steel I-Beam Size

I live in a 2000 sq ft split level house. In the rec room downstairs, there is a 6 by 12 wooden beam supporting the upper level. A 6x6 post holds it up. I would like to eliminate the post for aesthetic reasons, and replace the wooden beam with a steel I-beam. The span between walls is 18 feet. One of the walls is an exterior 2x4 wall, and the other wall, closer to the present post, is a divider. What size and type of steel I-beam should I use to support the upper level?

The issue involves more than just selecting a beam, for this beam will need to be supported by columns, and these by a foundation, for these are not -to the effect of significant loads- walls able enough and all that said needs be considered for a proper solution.

So if you decide to go for the reform hire a reasonable structural designer, is the best advice I can give you apart of what above.
 
I agree with ishvaaag - you need to get a Structural Engineer in on this (one who can check out the conditions in person). It sounds like you just need steel members that are comparable to the existing timber beam/post but it's tough to determine the existing beam's/post's capacity unless a detailed description is given. If one of the walls is just a divider, then the beam might go beyond it and thus might be longer than 18'.
