Steel Joist Institute manual?

I have a steel joists and joist girder book by Vulcraft dated 2003 that I used to make decisions on a complicated joist project that I have. The winning bidder on the project is somebody other than Vulcraft, and they have some questions, which they qualify by saying "per SJI." Is my Vulcraft manual the same as SJI? Or does SJI have their own manual that may or may not be different than Vulcrafts' version.

Look a little further down on whyun's link for the 41st edition of the SJI catalog. That's the same thing as the Vulcraft bascially and I believe has the SJI specs. I'm not at my office to confirm this.

I seem to remember that Vulcraft is not giving away free catalogs anymore.

As a result, we have changed our spec. to require a new catalog with shop drawing submittal.

I used Vulcraft catalogue for years and will continue to do. They are members of SJI. Their designs comply with SJI code.

I find it hard to believe that Vulcraft would do something that contradicts SJI code.

I admit that I never bought SJI code. I do rely on Vulcraft books. I also used other joist supplier’s catalogues. I do not need the code unless you are analyzing a joist or you are designing one.

I do have the previous copy of SJI's XX YEAR MANUAL 1928 - 19XX. It is a must for any engineer who designs for renovations. It has wealth of historical load tables and investigative guidelines and procedures.

You can get the electronic (.pdf) version of 41st Edition of the SJI Catalog for free. Just fill out this form
and follow the instructions.

There are 101 pages. I have never compared the Vulcraft Catalog with the SJI document, but it very possible Vulcraft does not make all of the sizes specified by SJI - other manufacturers may.

Vulcraft does provide free .pdfs for their catalog on their website through nucor.

Vulcraft is a member of SJI and has to meet certain guidlines they set.

Vulcraft design manual is pretty much the same as the SJI manual. Canaam design manual appears to be similar, if not the same, as the SJI manual. I have yet to pay for a copy of the Vulcraft manual, but maybe I've been lucky. There is a CD provided by Vulcraft that contains their design manual and some other stuff, too. I seldom use it because I prefer the bound manual. my younger engineers seem to like the CD.
