You might want to contact Chaparral Steel at 800-527-7979 (The number is few years old). Or Nucor-Yamato, the parent company of Vulcraft. Both companies actually produce steel and could give you help in your quest or at least point you in the right direction.

You could als try the AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) at They have a good website with links to most manufacturers and related sites.

Good Luck.

You need to consider cleanness specifications for your steel grade from the manufacturer / wholesaler.

Defects in plate can come from cracking but the most likely cause of problems is inclusions which arise during casting. These can be ductile or non ductile and dependant upon the end use can change the requirements. Non ductile inclusions can perpetrate cracks when futher processing is applied and for plate grades this will be your main area of concern.

There is a pretty good description of common steel sheet imperfections in the SAE book, J810 is the spec.
