Hi,

I am currently designing a communication steel monopole composed of 4 tube sections. A 10 ft section of the top tube is currently failing under moment and would like to know what are the best and most common solutions to strengthening the section that is failing.

Thanks,

Add guy cables, or increase the monopole section.

Many times, you can find a piece of the next bigger size/dia. pipe with a fairly compatible i.d. as compared with the existing pipe o.d. Then ripping/slitting a 5’ or 6’ length of that pipe in half or thirds makes cover pipe/cover pls. (not unlike cover pls. on a WF beam flg.) to reinforce the max. moment area on the monopole. Sometimes you have to bump that new pipe a bit in a press to open up its i.d. a fraction or to close it up a bit. Then you prep. the edges and weld it in place.

Not sure this is new design or strengthening of the existing monopole.. If this is new design, just choose a bigger size or extent the 3rd tube to the point where the top tube will not fail..

If it is existing monopole, you may strengthen the bottom of top tube with split sleeve as Mr dhengr (Structural) proposed...
