I am looking for design examples (specifically for selecting plate thickness) regarding steel plates subject to bending. Does anyone know of a website or reference material that may help?

I have been taught to find the moment applied to the plate and corresponding Smin (Smin = M/0.9*fy). Using the Smin I find the thickness based on the geometry of a rectangular section as follows:

S = (b*d^2) ; where, d= plate thickness= t, b= effective width

Therefore, t^2 = 6*Smin
b

However, what is the appropriate method for determining the effective width of the plate (for example, a 2m wide plate spanning 610mm.)

You can't go past "Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain" or Timoshenko's "Theory of Plates and Shells" for reference material. They should be on every structural engineers' bookshelf.

For a uniformly distributed load on a one-way plate, the effective width of the plate will be the actual width. For a point load at mispan on a one-way plate, the effective width will be approximately equal to 60% of the span.

You may find some relevant formulas at Make sure you understand the principles behind the spreadhsets rather than blindly populate them with data.

I use about 40t, from Troitsky's "Tubular Steel Structures" in section under Bins and Bunkers.
