Hi Folks,

I checked NDS Z values for steel to wood connections however the max thickness of the side plate indicated on the tables is for 1/4" for lag screws .I was wondering if anyone used any kind of fastener other than lag screws for steel plate to wood connection. My steel plate (1" wide and 3/8" thick and 3' long) is acting as a handrail, and the oak architectural handrail on top of it is for cosmetic purpose. I would like to use wood screws but the values are listed for only up to 3 Gage. Has anyone ever used wood screws for this kind of a condition ?

Thank you for your time !

I would think you'd be conservative if using the values for 3Ga when you are truly using 3/8" steel. In the end, the failure is in the wood/fastener, not the steel plate.
