My current project involves steel reheating in a small continuous furnace for rolling.(3 Tons/Hour - Pulverized Coal Fired)
I'm now stuck at somewhat bizarre problem . Achieving homogenous heating is getting difficult and is somewhat random.

There are two situation which confuses the most -
1.) Soaking zone thermocouple temperature - 1200 Celsius
Heating is uniform and no cold spots are there.

2.) Soaking zone thermocouple temperature - 1200 Celsius
Heating is non-uniform and there are several cold spots.
To eliminate cold spots, temperature was increased.
now soaking zone thermocouple temperature is 1270 Celsius
but still cold spots are there. (even more than before)

In both cases, coal type, material and every other thing is identical except Thermocouple temperature setpoint.

So the question is that why on increasing Temperature, cold spot increases???
and sometimes 1200 C is enough.

I would expect that result. The cold zones are a function of air flow in the furnace not the temperature. Turning up the temperature does nothing for getting the heat to the cold area(s).

You need to figure out how and where the actual heat is moving through the furnace. It can be that the material causes vortexes or blind spots on the product.

You may need a thermal imager to track this down and it will need to work at the expected temperature.
