We have recently got a job to design a stair case for a building in china. Rather than just specing normal AISC and ASTM beams we want to spec sizes and materials common in china. I have been searching and have found the ASTM Handbook of Comparative World Steel Standards 4th Edition. Which looking through the 3rd edition looks like it would provide the material information I need but not sure I want to spend $500 for a book I might only use on this one project.

Is there any resource that would give me beam sizes and maybe the common wide flange material spec?

First, if you were a member of ASTM ($95/year) you could access to unload/download many standards in the area you noted on your classification. Also you get prferential discounted prices on other publications and papers. A book of steel standards may be dated considering the rapid developments in China.

ASTM is generally slow to react, but is great on standards, testing and materials, but shapes are another type of creature that is governed by the Chinese demands for a project in China. Much of the materials are patterned after U.S. standards, but since China supplies many other markets that may have acceptible shapes along with the technical information. Codes will be a little different. Just as the earth is not the center of our solar system, the U.S. is not necessarily the center of the earth. There is a lot of technical communication and material standards that are common, but are not always available or economical. - I have been apartment complex ofabout 20, 10 to 15 story apartments and each unit had a $7000 toilet along side of the traditional "bomb-sight" unit. - "If it does not make sense, it must be true".

As far as something specific to China, you should look toward Chinese publications since there and many products that are made for certain geographic markets. Look for Chinese steel shapes and details on the internet for a start of contact the people that you know administering the project. Sometimes the step to doing work there is a big step down or a very big step up from a material and technology basis. Base your choices on what is acceptable from a code and design standpoint if it is to be fabricated in China.
