I've just moved from the London to Nairobi and am adjusting to the local construction practices... Currently designing steel trusses using small square hollow sections (30 - 75mm) with wall thicknesses from 3-5mm. Coming from the UK these sizes seem very small and while the analysis works I am concerned when it comes to fabricating the trusses and welding these sections together.
Is there anyone here with experience of this who can advise if there are any additional considerations that should be made when welding these thin sections together, minimum wall thicknesses etc?
I am also not particularly experienced in truss design but am working to the principle that the struts should be around the same size as the top/bottom chords to prevent local buckling at the joints.
I do have other concerns re workmanship and QA but that's another matter..
