Hi,

AISC-360 part C.13 and many other design codes indicate that, for staggered holes, the "Cochrane Equation" (the famous s^2/4g formula) must be used for determining "Net Area" of the tension member. I have used this equation several times in design, but I can't find any references that explains the idea behind it! I also couldn't find the original Cochrane's (1922) article either. It would be really great if anyone could give some references about this matter.

Many thanks in advance

At this page you can download vol.89 of Enginering News Record
(I went for year 1922, hence vol.89 from your quoted date)

where at p. 33 prof. Cochrane comments one prof. Young previous entry on the matter, found in p.911 in vol 88 in this collection

This is vol 88 of the collection.

at page 846 of vol 89 we have the article

Rules for Rivet-Hole Deductions in Tension Members
Simple Formulas for Equal-Stress and Equal-Area Methods Derived
How They Compare in Practical Application
By Victor H. Cochrane
Consulting Kngineer, Tulsa, Okla.

that may be somewhat of what you are looking for.

It was prof. Johm E. Lothers in his book that directed me to this source

Diseño de estructuras metálicas
John E. Lothers
Prentice/Hall Internacional
Madrid 1973

a translation of

Design in Structural Steel
John E. Lothers
Prentice-Hall International
Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1972

at section 304 a footnote indicates the introducing report by Victor H. Cochrane being in Engineering News (Record?) 59, 1908, page 465 and then, other by T.H. Smith in Engineering News, 73, 1915, page 893.

Smith's is at vol 73. p.893, effectively
This is confirmed in Cochrane's p.846 above
"The so-called theoretical method of allowing for the effect of staggered rivets, proposed by the writer in Engineering News of April 23, 1908, p. 465,"

In the main body of text also refers to the Steinman formula as better than Cochrane's, equation (303) in the spanish text.

Steinman's entry is quoted at a footnote coming from

Proceedings, ASCE 1922
D.B. Steinman

that I will be trying to locate

Steinman is also quoted in vol having an article in Engineering News that I may also try to locate.

errata...

Steinman is also quoted in vol 88 having an article in Engineering News that I may also try to locate.

Dear ishvaaag

I can't thank you enough. The original paper of Cochrane (1922) on page 846 of Eng-News vol. 89 solved it all. It is interesting that the (S^2/4g) formula is still accepted to give accurate results after all these years!

Thanks again, Really
