It is prepared in powder form and thermal spray-deposited onto surfaces. This is known as "Stelliting". The resultant surface is hard and both corrosion and wear resistant.
There are a variety of hard alloys which can be applied in such a manner for such purposes.
"Stellite" is also commonly applied by welding. There are several different compositions of Stellite that can be used. The main difference is the carbon content. This allows you to select an overlay that has the hardness-toughness properties that are best for your application.
