Hello,

I am BRAND NEW to this forum just so you know. I am using UG2 NX3 and I'm TRYING to make a clean STEP214 model. I've tried to export out my model but that doesn't work as well as I'd like. I've seen another user do a "SAVE AS" to a STEP214 file, which worked perfectly. Is there some setting that I need to make in order to properly export out using SAVE AS to get my 214STEP file. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Roger

I have gotten into the habit of using their external translator. First save the part ...

To Get there in WINDOWS:
START > PROGRAMS > UGNX3 > TRANSLATORS > STEP214 > EXPORT

You can do a batch of files, and you can change the settings easy with the pull-downs.

If you either use the external translator or you open the file and go to File>Export>Step214 you will be able to access the settings tab and change the settings in order to get things to work.

Whenever you do so the system will prompt you to save the changed settings to a file usually name "ugstep214.def" and by default into the installation directories. If you're on a corporate system then your system administrator has most likely write locked the installation files and directories. So you would have to save the file elsewhere.

Saving the file elsewhere is okay as long as you're prepared to go through the dialogs every time using either the exteral translator or the file export method. If however you wish to use "save as" then you need to have the system defaults set to something that works for you and in due course overwrite the copy in the default directory.

In addition to all that, the ugii_env.dat file can be changed to redirect the system to different directories to find default files but that file is also usually under system administration control. A possible tip in that regard for system administrators is to map each user's home directory to a drive letter and point the default paths to that.

Anyway the problems occur for most people when trying to export STEP214 assemblies with the wrong load options, something that also points to a default load_options.def file that you may have limited control over. Of course this can be addressed in the same way, but for many people loading "as saved" is a valid setting most of the time.

I hope you'll find knowing the options at least helps you decide how and why to use STEP properly and carefully in the future.

Similar settings apply for IGES any of the other translators so expect to either customise or familiarise yourself with going through the full dialogs pretty much every time you need to translate data.
