Hi folks,

I have a flexible wood diaphragm at one of the hillside projects that I am working on the design.
The second floor has a deck, and as per arch drawings, the deck is 4"lower than the interior diaphragm.
I would like to get you guys' input on transferring the shear to the higher main diaphragm (4" higher). Are there any online examples or references on this subject that you guys know ?

Thanks all for your time,

I know of know online examples but I don't feel that this is a big deal. Transfer up through some kind of rim member etc.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

I feel your pain dursunlutfu, I've always thought that the nitty gritty details of diaphragm design is nowhere to be found. Only if you're lucky enough to have someone at your office to teach you the design details beyond the very very basic parts covered in textbooks.

Having said that, take a look at the book "The Analysis of Irregular Shaped Structures" by Malone and Rice.

Yeah, that is how I exactly feel. Thank you for the book suggestion. I will definitely get it. Do you have any other books suggestions for practical purposes ?

Thanks a lot!
