stone veneer ties or no ties 1

Someone told me the other day that you don't need to provide masonry ties to substructure for 6" thick stone veneer.
I have never seen this in code and am highly doubtful. Anyone heard of this?

Veneer always needs to be tied to structure--that is why it is called veneer.

If these are large stone panels, they will not have masonry ties, but will instead have much more robust clips to connect to structure.

Some veneers can be applied directly to the substructure like wall tiling, using just thin-set. But not the thickness you're describing.

Seismic or high wind area?
thinking of it like a free standing wall, tie back would be required of height more then a few feet

Seismic and high wind are nil in this particular location.

the main question is can a 6" wall cantilever from its support. I would guess that under any marginal wind load you wouldn't get it to check out.

is this random ashlar, running bond? doubt it will matter much, but random ashlar is a bit more irregular with where anchors will be as its not known until the stone is laid.

The "veneer" could also be considered a part of a composite masonry wall for some situations. Ties would not be adequate, but mortar could be used depending on the construction technique. - Then it could be considered, even for some flexural purposes.

IBC Chapter 14 requires anchors for stones up to 10" thick. This chapter also provides requirements for adhered veneer.
