Storage Battery Commissioning

I understand that when a new flooded storage battery is installed and assuming they are dry charged. An electrolyte filling process will be undertaken as per manufacturer recommnedations. After the correct electrolyte level has been filled in, an initial "freshening charge" (constant potential method) or initial equalization voltage will be applied for a specific period of time as specified by the battery manufacturer. After the battery is fully charged, we will conduct a discharge test using a load bank to veiryf its discharge rate.

If we have a new battery charger designed and size for this new battery system, can we use initially test and commission it and use it to provide the initial charging for the new batteries?

It should have the equilizing charge function, depending on the battery type, this may be a regular maintenence procedure. You will still need to do a load bank test, or at least Z testing.

Yes! Why bother commissioning the batteries and not the charger at the same time? The charger will typically be required to do equalizations occasionally, anyway.

Obviously make sure the float and freshen charge voltages are set correctly first.

For batter Cx, have a look at IEEE 450.

The initial commissioning charge is usually at a voltage significantly higher than the periodic equalising voltage. Some chargers don't have the range of adjustment to perform the initial charge.

The battery manufacturer will almost certainly have a specific commissioning procedure which must be followed to maintain the warranty. It is a good idea to use a chart recorder or similar to provide evidence that the procedure was followed accurately in the even of a claim.

Does this mean that there will be a separate battery charger to this initial charging job? I'm trying to understand how can this be done.

I will check the new battery charger and battery specs and see the battery initial charging requirements and check whether this value is within the new battery charger equalization voltage setting range.

If yes, then I can commission first the battery charger then the battery right?

Is the initial charging similar to boost charging? How does this differ to the equalization charging?
