Storage tank sizing

Hey,

I need to do sizing for a storage tank.
The only information I get from client was, he need a 400 metric ton storage tank. The storage liquid will be oil.
How to size with the given information. I just need an estimation of a sizing. Usually, client will give us the capacity he wanted in m3, but this time its in metric ton.

Do I first have to know the density of the liquid? and calculate the capacity by using mass/density?

Density or specific gravity, then calculate required volume for that mass.

Once you have the total volume you will have to size the tank. Your allowable foundation load will give you a liquid height, use water if it is heavier to account for hydrotesting, then you can calculate the diameter.

400 metric tons of "oil" is about 500m3 storage volume so about 600m "nominal" total volume.
Might ba little less, but if that's all he's given you then use the numbers above.

At that sort of size it won't make massive difference.

so about 12m diam x 5.5 high?

The tank sizing, in terms of diameter and height, can be determined by the space available, soil loading conditions, the location in the seismic zone, etc.
