I'm being asked to design a storm shelter. I don't know any of the parameters yet -- going to meet with the people tomorrow -- but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a reference material I could start with to familiarize myself with the design standards for something like this before I go talk to them.

In the US it is ICC 500. That is the code. For more of a reference on it get a free copy of FEMA 361.

Literally, any day now, AISC is scheduled to release their brand new "Design Guide 35: Steel-Framed Storm Shelters".

The April, 2019, issue of "Modern Steel Construction Magazine" has a summary, see pages 17 thru 20.
