I am currently evaluating the design of a strainer to be constructed to ANSI B 31.4. The shell is 36" OD and has inlet and outlet nozzles located 180 degrees apart. The pressure rating is 1480 PSIG.

B31.4 calls for a full encirclement reinforcing ring due to the size and stress levels.

There is a statement that adjacent nozzles cannot take credit for the same reinforcing area. Would these nozzles be considered adjacent for the purpose of the code.

I wouldn't consider nozzles 180° apart on a 36" shell to be adjacent.

If they're 30" nozzles, I would consider them to be adjacent. Not enough info, but with B31.4 calling for full rings I suspect the nozzles at hand are not 3" nominal. Really, a piping issue really should be addressed in either forum378 or forum292 but not both.
