I am trying to find a copy of, "The Strength of Lugs in Fatigue" by R.B Heywood, Technical Note No. Structures 182, Jan 1956, Royal Aircraft Establishment.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Lugs are rather basic structural forms that yield to basic stress analysis. I favor a lug with a larger radius on the end contour and more depth on the end than the net side thickness. Then the focus will be on the net thickness on both sides.

I think RB Heywood lectured at Cambridge Uni, you could try the library at CUED

RBH wrote a book "Designing Against Fatigue", Mar. 1962, published by Chapman and Hall Ltd., in which he has a whole chapter on fatigue in lugs. It is an excellent treatise on the whole subject of fatigue.

the full title of that book is "Designing against Fatigue of Metals" according to Amazon (who don't have it in stock.

apparently UBC and Vancouver public library have a copy ...
yahoo'd the title and author, got a hit "find a library"

good luck

For many years I kept a copy of TN 182. I may still have it tucked away. If I can find it I'll let you know, but don't hold your breath.

RP,

I wont hold my breath, but I would certainly appreciate it if would have a quick look for it.

I downloaded a scanned copy of this a couple of months ago. Can't remember where I got it though ;^(
Can't find any reference on Google right now. I can't offer to put up a copy anywhere because it's on my other machine which is half a day's travel out in the bush.

Mantiticore,

Well I least I know it WAS available, thanks for letting me know. When you are next sat at your other machine perhaps you could send it to me or at least post the link.

Thanks,

RB1957,

I am not seeing the hit on Yahoo, perhaps you can post the link?

Thanks,

For lug fatigue report see Appendix 2 (page 13) of

naca.central.cranfield.ac.uk/reports/arc/cp/0232.pdf - Supplemental Result

Thanks amorrison4, but I don't believe that is the correct report. I have already found that one.
