Hello,

I am in need of some guidance on how to approach a stress analysis for this part. It is odd by its spiral design etched out of the annulus, see attached sketch (.PDF).

The inner edge is simply supported and the outer edge is guided. The axial load is 1 lb., thickness .013", and material 17-7 cres. I am also looking for the deflection at that load.

Any suggestions are most appreciated.

That would be my idea as well- it would actually be a fairly simple problem in FEA.

This thing behaves like a conical helical spring and may be approximately treated (if you need to do so) as such, using the formulae found in a machinery handbook.

I think you misunderstood the way the spring is constructed.

It is a thin round disk made of a metal strip which has three spiral slots. It is basically three cantilever beams having wide rectangular section which are curved on the thinner side of rectangular section. The three springs are working in parallel while a conical helical spring is made of one continuous wire having round or rectangular section.

This is the same spring which Mleo11 posted on the "spring engineering" forum thread693-144618.
