Stress concentration under press fits

Hi all,

I am trying to determine the axial stress distribution in a shaft with a bearing pressed onto it. A verbal reference told me that the stress concentration close to the edge of the bearing can be as high as 4-5 times the nominal stress depending on loading conditions and amount of interference, but I have had little success finding any guidelines on to perform quantitative calculations.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Peterson's "Stress Concentration Factors" has a section on this topic, which is probably the best you can do short of an FEA. The factors given range from about 1.5 to almost 4, depending on the conditions, size of shaft etc etc. But I have just noticed that in the second edition, they have screwed up with a major typo and left out a whole column of factors (Page 252). To see what they are supposed to be, you need the first edition! (I have both). In case you are interested and can only get a copy of the second edition, here is what they should be :
