Stress Cone Location

On a 5 kv system installation using shielded cable, do the stress cones have to be at the end of the conductors next to the cable lugs or can they be located 2 to 3 feet back from the cable lugs?

This added distance would allow someone to replace a cable lug without having to re-do the stress cone installation.

If the answer is "yes", can this also be done to 15 kV cable installations?

My opinion is "yes". For instance:

The added 'tail' is okay as long as you realize that it does not have the stress relief and equalization of the cable BELOW the stress cone, therefore you MUST pay attention to the dress of the unshielded cable, including proximity to the walls or structures of the inclosure and the other adjacent conductors.

If you don't do that, then localized electrical stresses will start problems, evidenced by ozone production, corona, etc.

I agree with oldfieldguy and in the above article page 24 is attached a table of minimum clearance to be maintained above the
limit of the shield.
"if the clearance between Ph/Ph or Ph/Grd cannot be maintained in the cross over area Raychem's conductive tubing can be used.
Clearance then only need to be maintained above the end of the conductive tubing" [Raychem's remark]
