I've come across an old paper presented in Product Engineering, March 1956, called "Stresses in Perforated Panels", by JW Dally and AJ Durelli. It treats the topic of stress concentrations in sheet with rows of open perforations.

In a nutshell, it states that the stress concentration factor at the edge of an open hole, in a sheet under stress in both the X and Y axes is less than if it was loaded in just one axis (just the X axis, for example).

This sounds intuitively reasonable, since if the sheet is pulled in one axis, it will contract in the other axis. I would like to generate some discussion of the topic, as it will reinforce my ability to defend using this paper to substantiate my future work.

Do any of my fellow members have comments on this paper? Or, for that matter, anything to add from other sources?
