I am looking for some design example / guidance for the structural deign of different types of Chutes in material handling application, for example Crusher discharge chute, Screen discharge chute and other types of small or large chutes. I tried material handling forum but need more information. If possible, please advise if there is any good book or web site on this subject or any other information. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

The cross-section of the chute is usually established by the drafter and mechanical engineer based on geometry of the equipment, in your case the crusher discharge and associated transfer conveyor. The depth of the chute is based on the material flow rate. The angle of inclination is usually provided by the mechanical engineer based on material properties, especially moisture content. One paper that may be of interest is “Design Principles for Chutes to Handle Bulk Solids” by D.S. Dick and T.A. Royal (
The structural design case for a chute will be the blocked chute condition or impact loads, usually the former. Chutes are usually comprised of stiffened flat plates, so the design of each element is quite straightforward. The contact surfaces should be lined with a wear material, usually quenched and tempered steel plate such as Bisalloy. Don’t forget to include the mass of these liners in your calculations.

Other considerations are access/inspection doors, dust seals and dust collection take-offs if required.

Thank you very much for this information. I downloaded the article and will go through it now.

I will be looking forward to any other recommendation also on this subject.
