I have a client that has a couple of older buildings that they want a "risk assessment" done for. Basically, these buildings were done in a era where there wasn't much in the code as far as seismic goes.

We are very early in this conversation, so they haven't qualified what they mean by "risk assessment". But I wanted to ask here: is there a standard or document anywhere that gives a procedure for this situation?

Try ASCE 41-17 Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings.

Thanks Jed. Does that have some means/guide of "risk assessment"? I think what these guys want (at the end of the day) are probabilities of failure.

If referring to seismic I’d say they want a PML report.

Thanks. Can you recommend a guide to doing one?

Not a North American reference but heaps of work like this has been done in New Zealand

Here's an example one: (You can find a decent number of these online since councils frequently publish them publically)
