Does anyone have a good reference for preliminary structural sizing of aircraft? I'm a detail stress analyst, and don't have much experience with prelim structural sizing, anything will be greatly appriciated. I need something that will allow me to do some quick and dirty calculations to support the program I'm on.

Thanks,
punkeng

Hi Punkeng,

As a start you can try and get hold of the book "Airframe Stress Analysis and Sizing" by M. C-Y. Niu, published by Conmilit Press. Amazon.com should be able to provide you with a copy.

Punkeng,

There is another excellent book which is still available titled "Practical Stress Analysis for Design Engineers" by Jean-Claude Fabel, published by Lake City Publishing Company.
It has many practical numerical examples of basic "hand calculations" used in airframe stress analysis and sizing.

It is obtainable at Amazon and Barnes and Noble ($98), but used copies are also available at a reduced price.

Jan Roskam, Preliminary Sizing of Aircraft. It's the first book in a series of 8 or 9 VERY detailed books. Later books focus on particular components, such as landing gear and systems.

Available on Amazon, I bet. Probably lots of used copies out there, too.
