The welds you have shown are quite common for connecting HSS. However, if you want the sides of the HSS members to be flush, it would be a flare bevel weld, not a groove weld. If you want one HSS to be welded to the flat of another HSS that could be a groove weld (I would probably look at fillet welds instead of groove welds).
 
Flare bevel welds are common due to the radius of the tubing corners.
