Hi,
I started my engineering career in the automotive industry in positions of applications and development engineering. Now I slipped into project management. It seems to be a "natural" progression in the automotive industry when working on the supplier side.

The project management is not really what I would consider engineering work and I became an engineer to do engineering work...

Looking at my resume and checking what kind of jobs are out there (in SE Michigan) I would have excellent chances for a different project management position. But that is not what I want. So far I have only received limited responses to "engineering" positions I applied far.

Ideally I would like to change industries. Architectural/construction/civil is what would interest me most. My back ground is in mechanical engineering, but there are several areas where mech. and civil engineering overlap. In normal times I would think it would not be too much of a challenge to get the foot in the door in the civil engineering industry. However, the current employment (unemployment) situation adds additional challenges.

Would you agree that this is mostly the hurdle I have to overcome or do you disagree and can give me some advice on what I can do to make that switch reality? I would like to be more involved in real engineering work (hands on, I am not affright to get dirty and do field work and I am aware that most likely I would have to take a pay cut).

Thanks for any advise.

If you're writing cover letters that long, they're losing you jobs.

The word 'affright' is archaic. Employers will not look it up to find that it's a real word, or used to be. That kind of stuff will lose you jobs, too.

One option might be to join an OEM designing or developing the parts or systems you currently project manage.
