sub for SRS-60 spring steel 2

thread693-187662 - Along the lines of these questions and answers, I have been asked by a supplier if they can use springs made from HDS12L steel as a substitute for the SRS-60. Vendor is ArcelorMittal USA. Chemistry looks pretty close to the same. Does anyone know this material?

Yes... it is pretty much the same.

The SRS-60 is as I stated proprietary to I believe Republic Steel.

More than likely ArcelorMittal USA has taken a sample of Republic's material, and matched it as close as possible and given it a new trade name.

HDS12 is a patented spring steel developed by Mitsubishi Steel. It is produced under license for the North American market by ArcelorMittal (formerly Inland Bar Products). It is one of the newer generation of high strength steels for suspension springs, which means it is an acceptable alternative to SRS60 (patented by Kobe, produced in USA by Republic). There are several good spring suppliers who work with HDS12, so I would be inclined to go forward with this option.
