The original plates supplied are Chrominox. These are wall liner plates used in ash handling plant of a boiler. Perhaps as an import substitute or cost reduction measure I have been asked to cast plates 450mm square with thickness of 12mm. (Original plate thickness is 6mm). Please can someone advise the suitability of CA 15 alloy.Thanks in anticipation.

arunmrao;
I couldn't find any technical information on Chrominox plate material in terms of hardness or mechanical properties. Can you get this information from the requestor? What exactly is the ash handling operation for this material?

CA 15 is a cast version of AISI type 410 ss. Depending on the heat treatment it could be hardened for use as wear liners.

For our power boilers we use NiHard or ceramic lined pipe for bottom ash handling piping because the bottom ash is actually crushed slag, which is very abrasive. Hardened 410 won’t work in this application.

For fly ash, which is lighter weight ash and is entrained in the flue gas and separated by a precip into hoppers, this is not as abrasive and could be handled by cast, 410 ss material. We use carbon steel piping systems to move fly ash.

Metengr thanks for your ready response(a star for you!). I too do not have the mechanical properties nor the hardness condition. Hence I had posted this open ended question to get your response.(Please do not tag it as LAME QUESTION.)

The trend in power plants is to replace NiHard plates by ceramic tiles . I presume that 410 is being used as a wall liner in low wear zone as suggested by you. But then these should be lifelong fittings not needing any replacements.

While on the subject of cast wear plates I need your assistance about materials used in machines used for cement concrete mixing. There are these trucks carrying the drum into which is poured the ready mix. There are scrapers, wall liners and baffles etc used . Also there are pumps used to pump these slurry for construction of high rise buildings. I am amazed by the engineering constructions.

I shall be thankful if you could provide some technical inputs which I am planning to go after. There is a huge after market demand for these parts
