The pin may not have been seated deeply enough in the center plate. If the pin is standing up too tall, it holds the pump stator up. The pump looses prime and draws in air. The pump overheats and binds up. The full torque of the motor snaps the pin. Look for a witness mark on the underside of the pump where the pin was touching it. Verify that you are using the correct pin. Measure the installed height of the pin and compare that to Sundyne specifications. The end of the pin should not touch the pump.

OK. I can keep guessing a little bit more. Is the suction line to the internal pump still the original design? If it is too short, the pump will draw in air. If the tubing fittings are in bad condition, it could also draw in air. Are you using the OEM recommended ISO grade for oil? Has the pump ever spun in reverse (leaky check valve)?
