Not again. This subject comes up every 6 months. These surfaces are so old all the patents are from the 1970s. These are a) easy to make and b) of just about no practical value in the real world.

There are several threads here on this and how to make them.

they'll be used in a new Samsung or Apple phone, I hear... to help pass the "toilet test"?

But you don't understand. Now it's "nano technology". [hourglass]

It won't be used in anything because these surfaces don't work in the real world. If they did they'd have been commercialized in the 40 years since their discovery.

Such surfaces need to be low surface energy and microscopically rough. Any contact destroys the fragile surface structure and the effect is lost. Huge companies including Degussa (Creavis) tried for years to make these work and gave up.

A regular, smooth water repelling surface does work and you can already send your phone off to be plasma treated if you so wish. It costs money, is cool but doesn't really make sense.
