Superior SS made in Louisiana

I heard about a stainless steel alloy of superior hardness and wearability made or sold in Louisiana. Does anybody know of the name or designation of this material? (Could be hype for sales purposes.)

If it's knife blade material it will be hype.
 
"Cromgard" or 3CR12 is sold in the US by American Utility Metals as a 12% Chromium stainless steel with good weldability. One office is in Baton Rouge.
 
3CR12 is an inexpensive structural grade of stainless. It was developed in South Africa to be used for utility applications like coal chutes, railroad car bodies, light poles, etc. It has minimal corrosion resistance and pretty good strength and toughness, but nothing extraordinary.

Duplex stainless steels may fit your description they are harder than 300 series stainless steels. Common duplex stainlesses like 2205 or LDX 2101 are around 215 Brinell Hardness compared to 150 or so Brinell for 304L stainless. This should translate to better wear/erosion resistance.
 
I never knew of any stainless made in Louisiana. Lots is used there, however.

Cromgard, is a rebranding of the product that was 3CR12, it conforms to the same ASTM and European specifications that 3CR12 as a branded product used to be.
American Utility Metals, stocks this material throughout the United States, as well a the Baton Rouge Office, there are sales offieces in Colorado Springs and Centralia, WA.
The material was initially developed to material handling applications, where corrosions as well as abrasion is a factor. It found extensive uses in the coal and sugar industries. Since the initial application areas, it has developed wide ranging applications in transport for bus & coach construction, road sweepers, passenger and freight rail vehicles, trailers and fuel tanks. Other application areas include hot gas ducting, wide areas of use in power stations, waste water treatment plant, petrochemical plant, agriculture, electronic enclosures, clay and concrete (cinder block) manufacturing plants.
It primary aim is to replace carbon and coated carbon steel, where the coating have not provided adequate protection, but operators have considered traditional stainless steel such as grade 304 as to expensive a solution.
Because of its low nickel content it has typically been around half the price of grade 304, and has maintained very stable pricing over the last ten years.
