Suppress all cosmetic threads in an assembly for inteference detection

Is there a way to suppress all cosmetic threads in all parts of an assembly for interference detection purpose. These cosmetic threads were generated from hole wizard (tapping). I notice that there are fake inferences between tapped holes and fasteners. I could suppress all the cosmetic threads individually. But it is too much work. How do you handle these kinds of fake interference? I still want to SW to detection any interference between fasteners and their mating parts. Otherwise, I could just suppress all fasteners.

Do you guys know a better way?

That's what I would do--suppress the fasteners. You know they won't be a problem, based on the way you modeled and assembled everything, right? Do a thorough check on the fasteners and holes, making sure nothing has slipped, then suppress the fasteners (or you might be able to hide them without detection--I'm not sure).

Suppressing the cosmetic threads will not not change the hole size. It is, as the name implies, purely cosmetic ... just a sketched circle denoting where the thread OD or ID will be.

Also you do not need to suppress the fasteners. You can select whatever parts you want to be included when using the Interference detection tool. Creating a config with all the fasteners suppressed would be a useful idea though.

No, I can trust myself. I would like to SW to double check my work. This is especially true if you are dealing with a large assembly where many existing parts (in vault) used. Actually for a large assembly, I do not know if they won't be a problem, based on the way I modeled and assembled everything. For an example, I would ike SW to check depth of any tapped holes to see if they are deeper enough for fasteners used. I would also like to know if heads of fasteners interfere with any other surrounding parts.

Suppressing the cosmetic threads generated with Hole Wizard will change the hole size. I use them a lot for interference detection. If you search "cosmetic thread" in SW help menu, you will find the following info.

For tap and pipe tap holes, you can add cosmetic threads in the Hole Wizard.

NOTE: For tapped holes with cosmetic threads created in the Hole Wizard, the hole diameter is the diameter of the tap drill. For tapped holes without cosmetic threads, the hole diameter is the outer diameter of the thread.

Not on my (SW2004) machine!!! [sad]

If, when creating the tapped hole, the no cosmetic thread option is selected, then I agree, the hole will be the nominal thread size (Ø1/2" for 1/2"-20 thread). But that is not the same as suppressing the cosmetic thread from the FM tree ... at least not on my computer (hole measures Ø.453). That would be a handy feature though.

What version of SW are you using?

I think I did not phrase it properly. Instead of saying "Suppress" cosmetic thread feature (from FM tree), I should have said "Remove cosmetic thread" from Hole Definition dialog box from Hole Wizard command.

Ahhh, OK ... but that could be a lot of work ... which of course is why you asking in the first place. [smile]

This probably could be done through API ... but I don't have a clue of how to do that.

If you add or remove a cosmetic thread it will change the ID of the hole and therefore break any mates associated with the holes. We ran into an instance where someone added cosmetic threads to a fastener that was used in 100's of assemblies.

But when you REMOVE or ADD back the cosmetic thread thru. hole wizard, it will recover the same ID of the hole and therefore still resolve the same mates associated with the holes.

True but if you remove the CT's for an interference check couldn't you possibly introduce an error if you accidently moved a fastener ever so slightly because it wasn't mated? That's where I was going with the broken mates. I should have made that a bit more clear.
