surface carbon content test 1

Hello,

Does anyone know, for determining surface %carbon of a carburized sample (dia 1", length 6&quot - spectral analyze-, what is the influence of sample condition? I mean hardened or not, after carburizing.

Could have any influence at spectral analyze?

[Carburize]

Two methods used routinely -
1) machine off a layer approximately 0.005-inch to 0.010-inch thick using a clean lathe - collect the sample material and use a LECO carbon analyzer.
2)Use a spectrograph direct on surface - in this case the laboratory has to be very experienced in carbon analysis and the curved surface of a 1-inch diameter sample will be a big problem, it might be better to use this technique on the end of the bar.
I don't believe there will be any difference between the values obtained on an as-carburized or a quenched sample. If the machining technique is used to provide sample material for a LECO, then turning the test sample is much easier as-carburized.

With a non hardened suface, you could apply, lever rule, by phases measures.
