Hi all,

Is surface hardening better than harden the whole part to prevent wear from occurring or then the part while be to brittle. Mainly, I'm considering moving parts such gears.

And can someone tell me what are exactly these types of surface hardening:- Carburising, Nitriding and Carbonitriding ?

How is it the process exactly ? Do you know any good books or sites which show this how it can be done ?

Best Regards,
Barbo

If you can provide more specifics regarding your gear design I'd be happy to suggest a suitable material and heat treatment.

In general, "wear" (ie. loss of material due to abrasion) is not usually a concern with the design of gears. Instead, gear designers are usually mostly concerned with tooth surface contact and tooth bending fatigue life. The best choice of material and heat treat will depend on the overall requirements of fatigue life, loads, cost, gear size and shape, reliability, precision/tolerance of the gear set, etc.

Hope that helps.
