surge, lightning arresters vs. surge suppressors 4

Hi...

Can someone provide a technical distinction between a surge arrester and a surge suppressor? I believe they are both given under the umbrella term, "surge protective device"?

To me, the diff is:

1. A surge arrestor is used for MV/HV applications.
2. A surge suppressor is something that you use in your home to protect your electronic appliances.

Surge arresters = lightning arresters
surge suppressors = TVSS = transient voltage surge supressors

IEEE abandoned the term "lightning" arrester many years ago, but old habits die hard, especially when it involves the NEC.

I agree with Mike that surge arrester generally refers to medium and high voltage.

I believe that UL refers to SPD - surge protective devices, which I would equate with surge supressors.
