What would you guys suggest as the most reasonable way of protecting against the effects of a lightning strike and or residual transients to equipment? I've already suggested using a groundrod tied to the chassis and with minimal travel path from unit EG connection point to the rod.
There are thousands of surge protection products and I'm not really sure which type would be the best here....I need to protect a small control board....all discrete components...a small (75VA) transformer, and PLC that sit in a metal box outside.
I know this is kind of a broad question, but just wanted to get some opinions...

Surge protectors don't work unless there is inductance or resistance in the line ahead of them to absorb some of the power. Something like a corecom filter ahead of any mov devices gives you a fighting chance.
