I would like to know how many small structural engineering firms are surviving the downturn. I am most interested in firm size with less than 10 people. If you are surviving what is keeping you alive? Where are you located? I seen small engineering firm in the California bay area that have been counting on remodel and additions, and any thing they can get where they have cut their service fee down to almost 50%. Just wondering how everyone else is doing in this treacherous economic environment.

We are a small specialty firm, doing structural and construction forensics. No structural design, except for occasional remediation necessities. We have 5 engineers, no support staff, and no technicians. Each of us shares the admin burden to some degree; however, I do most of the billing..always late!

We are reasonably busy. We enjoy a good reputation and work mostly from referrals.

Given all that, we're probably not a good measure of the market.
