SUSPECTED THERMAL LEAK IN THE BUTANE TANK (DOUBLE WALL TANK)

Good morning everybody,

We have in our industrial plant a butane double wall storage tank with technical data as fellow:

- Volume of tank is 70.000 m3.
- The operating temperature is –40°C.
- Inner tank is made of steel and outer tank is made of concrete.
- The tank is in operation phase.

At this time, we suspect a thermal temperature leak according to the indications of the temperature probes installed in the wall of the tank.

Please , what could be the possible codes applicable in this case.

Same questions apply - what is insulation?, what are temperatures - -40 inside to - 3 in concrete looks Ok to me

What is monitoring of the annulus - pressure? - Gas detector?

In response to your message, please find below my clarifications:

1) Insulation: PERLITE
2) temperature is inside the tank: -5°C
3) in annulus space we monitor the leak detection by thermal sensors.

My question is: Can I use BS 7777 std for this monitoring?

It is now BS EN 14620.

I can't work out how the temperature "inside the tank" is only minus 5 if you're storing liquid butane at very low pressures - it was minus 40 in the post above....

please explain and provide a proper cross section of this tank so we can understand what it is made of, where the temperature sensors are and why you think there is a leak.

Or are you talking about a "cold spot" where the perlite insulation isn't as good??

The question is vague and confusing so that's the answer you get.
