Are you getting any type of error message?
The only time I have seen this is when the file got corrupted from the source.

Hyper-threading will not help.

Updating to a later SP may help.

Is your all your physical RAM being recognised?

My work is to cheap to buy the service to update SW.

All RAM is being recongnised.

Each time when I try to open a large file, it takes for ever to open or the computer freezes.

Are the files coming from SOlidWOrks or other CAD? If SW, what version? Have your source resend files.

If this is happening to just the larger files, it must be a setting on your machine.

What are your VM settings?

Are you having problems with larger native SW files, (non STP or IGS) ?

Im sorry, what is VM?

I looks only to be large files im haing the problem with.

I can open a 150MB SW file with no problem.

VM = Virtual Memory
Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance/Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory/Change

Are you opening the STP/IGS files locally or over a network?

VM is 1536MB int 3000MB max

Does Hyper-threading hurt my performance?

It shouldn't ... but it has been known to interfere with SW. Turn it off if you can. It can easily be turned on again.

You will need to boot into the BIOS to "de-activate/activate" it.

I turned HT off but I still cant open the files.

That didnt help much. It seemed to start out faster, but it still didnt open.

Can you post the file? See faq559-1177 for details.
Maybe someone else with SW05-SP0 will try to open it for comparison. I will try with SW06-SP4.1.

Also can you get the same file in Parasolid format. You might have better luck with that.

When you try to open/convert the STEP file does SolidWorks crash? If I remember correctly when I was on SP0.0, I had a problem when I try to open a STEP file that SolidWorks would always crash. I had our VAR come in and there was bug with SP0.0. They sent the file to SolidWorks and it was fixed in SP1.0 or SP2.0 as I recall. Hope this helps.

There you go dje71183 ... ammunition to take to your skinflint bosses to prove that an upgrade (or at least re-instatement of subscription to get the later SPs) is necessary.

Has the GB switch definitely been enabled in the boot.ini file? I have seen computers that would not make it past 1.3 GB useage by SolidWorks. After enabling the switch, we could utilize more of our 2GB of RAM that we have.

1) If you have HT on, it will hurt perfroamnce, turning it off will incrase performance.

2) if you are running out of RAM then you need more RAM.

3) You need to set your VM to 1500 for both Min and Max.

4) SP0.0 was the first SP out... the only way you are going to be able to tell if its the SP or not is to test it on a machine that is using a later SP. if it opens there then its a SP issue and you will have to upgrade... The one advantage you have here is that if there is a bug in the SP that is keeping you from doing your work. Your VAR has to give you the SP that fixes the issue for you. However since SW07 is now out, they may not have too... because I think that only works if you find it with the latest or the version previous. SW05 is 3 versions ago and is not supported anymore by your VAR or by SW, because its time to upgrade.

Good luck!
