SW2005 and MDT/AutoCad 1

Happy New Year Guys and Gals!

I was wondering if there is still a need for MDT/AutoCad on users PC in our company. Reason I was asking................? that I'm planning on moving over to SW2005 at the end of Jan. and would like to Uninstall all Autodesk products and use SW2005 only. But still want to have the capibilities of "FeatureWorks" for old MDT 3D models. Is this a doable thing?

If you plan on converting your MDT models over into SW. THen you will need to keep your MDT installed. The reason is because SW doesn't open MDT natively. When you open an MDT file in SW it provokes MDT to open in the background and allows SW to open the file. It's a strange file conversion but if you don't have MDT installed you will not be able to open your old MDT files.

Hey Macduff. I suggest keeping MDT/AutoCad running on at leat one PC. You will most likely need it in the future.

Are many of your company drawings in Autocad? Ours are, and it is quicker to make minor changes by pulling them up in Autocad. It also takes time to become proficient in SW it might be better to maintain a dual system for a while, if that is your case.

For just minor changes, you could use the DWGeditor that comes with sw2005.
