Happy Friday everyone,
I'm thinking about installing SW2005 with SPR 1.1 this weekend and need some advice. Do I need to remove SW2004 SP 4.1 from everyone's computer or can I do an upgrade? I was talking to our IT dept and he's thinking of doing an upgrade. He's creating an Admin image so we can do a network load to everyones computer. Also, we have have PDMWorks to deal with as well.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

WE did a clean install including a registry edit. I figure that helps elemenat any problems that can be created with an upgrade. After the instilation we did a disk defragmentaion becouse of all the file creation and deleting.

I would go with a clean install ... why run the risk of "contamination" & having to re-install?

Hi Macduff. The Admin Image worked well, but it will uninstall 2004 for you. You can do the Admin Image, then remove 2004. Be sure the pc that you do the image from has the SW settings you use because whoever gets the image will have a copy of that setup. You still will have to do some tweaking to each pc. The nice part of the image is you can update future SP's to all pc's that had the image from one pc. Also when the update is finished, everything works well, and everyone is logged off SW, update the files in PDMW to 2005.

sorry, I just notice I missed a word. Admin image will NOT uninstall 2004 for you.

Anyone know a command line option to remove Solidworks 2004? Each service pack had a different clsid in the registry so using the msi to remove it requires running a command with all clsids' of each service pack since we had different users at different service packs.

I use a program called RegCleaner. It can be downloaded free from
It is very easy to use and although not foolproof, usually finds all necessary registry links to a particular product. It has a restore function in case you mistakenly delete something.

If you use Windows Cleanup utility will clean out SW like it wasn't ever installed and it's free from Micro$oft. Just run a search at the homepage of MS for "Cleanup utility".

What this does is, is the Clean up utilty searches for all Windows installed components. Then you just search through the list find SW and remove it and it was like it was never installed on the computer. However you will still need to clean out the HDD and maybe the registry according the the FAQ of Clean uninstall and reinstall.

We did an update from SW04 last week and had no problems... At least that we've noticed yet.

I liked that all of our customization(options, macro buttons, etc) came through to the SW05 so we don't have to redo all the computers.

You can do a new install of SW05 with your SW04 installed and get the same options. The only thing that happens is SW copies the reg entries and then shows them in the new version. With an upgrade you my experience instabilty later or strange issues. If you do a reisntall will probably be in order and if you don't do a copy setting wizard now, then all your setting will be lost.

Guys and Gals,
I made the big move from SW2004 to SW2005 on Monday. Everything seems working good and need to do some fine tuning. Also moved to PDMWorks 2005 that day as well. Thank you for all your input on loading the software. It worked great!

Thanks again my friends,
